Mental Health Awareness Month: Small Ways to Take Care of Yourself at Work

Work can be tough. Long shifts, loud environments, and fast-moving tasks can leave you drained, not just physically, but mentally too. That’s why taking care of your mental health on the job is just as important as wearing the right gear or clocking in on time.

Here are a few easy ways to protect your peace, even during a busy workday:

1. Take real breaks.

If you’re on lunch, take that time for you. Step outside if you can. Get some air. Scroll your phone, chat with a coworker, or just sit quietly. A real break can reset your mood and help you get through the rest of your shift.

2. Breathe before you react.

Things can get heated at work. If someone says something that bothers you or a task gets overwhelming, take one deep breath before you respond. That one breath can stop a bad moment from turning into a worse one.

3. Talk to someone you trust.

Whether it’s a coworker, friend, or family member, having someone to vent to after work can do wonders. Don’t keep it bottled up. You don’t need to fix everything, you just need to feel heard.

4. Notice the signs.

Feeling constantly exhausted, irritated, or down? That’s not just a “bad week.” It could be your mental health asking for help. Pay attention to how you feel, and take it seriously. Asking for support is a strength, not a weakness.

5. Celebrate the small wins.

Finished a task early? Helped a teammate? Showed up even when you didn’t feel like it? That counts. Recognize the little victories. They add up.

You’re more than just a worker. You’re a person with a life outside of your job and that life matters. When you take care of your mental health, you show up stronger, sharper, and more in control. You deserve that.
