What Is the International Day for Women?

International Women's Day is a big event that happens all over the world. It is a day to celebrate and honor the things women have done throughout history. Supporters of women's rights and admirers of women's accomplishments worldwide have gathered since the early 1900s.

The eighth of March is celebrated annually as International Women's Day. This worldwide celebration, which coincides with the United States' own Women's History Month in March, is an opportunity to learn about, celebrate, and honor women from all over the world.

How This Special Day Honoring Women Came to Be

The 1800s saw many national declarations supporting women's rights. The United States laid the groundwork for an international movement. An international celebration of women's rights began in the United States in 1909 and quickly spread worldwide. On March 19, 1911, the first celebration of International Women's Day was held.

At least one million people participated in rallies supporting women's rights to vote, run for office, receive an education, and be free from discrimination.

These days, millions of people worldwide celebrate International Women's Day. Internet-based organizing tools and campaigns helped boost International Women's Day in the early 21st century.

In 2011, March was named Women's History Month in the United States. This was done to honor the first 100 years of the movement and to include more women's accomplishments in the celebration.

More than one hundred countries now observe International Women's Day, with many of them adopting similar themes and color palettes to represent those values. The color purple has long been associated with honor and fairness. The color white has come to represent innocence and new beginnings. The color green has come to represent a glimmer of optimism.
